Abstract

The work begins analysing the long road covered by the church up to the summons of the council of Trent, underlining the part that the popes and Charles V played in this ecclesiastical and political event. We also study the different conceptions that the popes, the emperor and the propestants had of the council. The main part of the work, which couldn´t be any other way, is dedicatd to the three periods of this great assembly with their respective popes, problems and doctrinal and reforming decrees, insisting, especially on the decisive presence of the emperor in the two first concilion phases.
