Abstract

Many African children have chronic hunger. They cannot read nor write and their life expectancy is very low. This is probably the greatest tragedy of the XXI century. Many African children eat only once a day, when they come back home by night. This terrible situation generates, among other undesirable consequences, an inability to neither learn nor even being attentive at the school, as well as a vicious circle of hunger, poverty and illiteracy. A way to fight against hunger is by linking the efforts on its alleviation with primary education. A proposal in this sense made in the district (“chiefdom”) of Biriwa, in northern Sierra Leone through an agriculture development program is shown. Primary school students must learn to mange small school orchards at their schools. This must allow them to have lunch while they attend classes, which should improve their learning capacities, as well as they assure an improved food security for them and their families.
