Influence of organizational culture on students with emotional and behavioral difficulties

Abstract

This paper is product of a research, its purpose was to analyze the influence that culture has on students with emotional and behavioral difficulties, in a school. The study was qualitative of phenomenological design, the gathering of information was made through the application of interviews and focus groups to the students, staff and parents, of the school. The analysis showed actions of institutional organization for the students with emotional and behavioral difficulties, perceptions about the interactions between members of the school and effects on these students. The main results were that the organizational culture influences students in skills such as self-control, social skills, motivation and self-knowledge. The study can not be generalized, however contributes to understand the influence that the schools´s everyday life has on students and how the development of formal and informal practices is determined by the characteristics of each educational institution.

  • Seidy María Méndez-Chaves, Escuela Santa Rita, Rio Cuarto de Alajuela, Costa Rica.

    Docente de Educación Especial con Licenciatura en Jóvenes y Adultos con Discapacidad de la Universidad Católica de Costa Rica y Magister en Psicopedagogía de la Universidad Estatal a Distancia de Costa Rica. Con experiencia de 10 años como docente de Educación Especial en el Ministerio de Educación Pública en diferentes zonas de Costa Rica y, actualmente, en la Escuela Santa Rita de Río Cuarto, Alajuela. Ha participado como conferencista en III Encuentro Nacional: “Investigación sobre Discapacidad en Costa Rica”. Sus líneas básicas de investigación giran en torno a la atención de estudiantes con barreras en el aprendizaje en las instituciones de educación pública.
