Circus freaks: The convergence of space and form in Diane Arbus’ photography and Ana María Shua's micro story

The art of finding rarity initiates the creative process of a photographer and by extension, of the writer. Diane Arbus and Ana María Shua find it in the carnavalesque space detached from anything official, authoritarian, theological, political, or serious, both of them constructing parallel artistic processes. This essay elaborates on a series of narrative strategies of resonance in photography as well as in micro story. Both present us with a different world as a projection of our own world where authenticity and "normality" are being manipulated. Shua and Arbus interpret the reality according to their own ideology, consciousness, and aesthetics by entering into the ambiguous relationship between art and truth. The documentary component in their artistic language results in the most effective media to shape ideas and to transform our vision of the world
