75 years of commitment to quality: The BBC public service model of television

Abstract

On 2nd November 2011 the BBC television service was 75 years old. During this time the BBC has faced many challenges, it has been successful and has become a model of public service television. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to analyze the key elements that give reason for its international prestige. In particular, the origins of the corporation, its governance, its funding system and the quality of its programmes will be analyzed.

    Licenciada y doctora europea en Comunicación Audiovisual por la Universidad de Navarra y Master en Media Management por la Universidad de Stirling (Escocia). En la actualidad, es la vicedecana del grado en Comunicación Audiovisual de la Universidad San Jorge y dirige el grupo de investigación Televisión y calidad: observatorio audiovisual ara­ gonés, reconocido como grupo de investigación emergente por el Gobierno de Aragón. Su interés académico se centra en el estudio de la televisión pública en Europa, en la calidad de los contenidos televisivos y en la gestión y economía de los medios de comunicación.
