Notes to a study Colour Spanish press in the XIX Century

Abstract

Colour is a fact in today’s papers. A few years ago, black and white was the only contrast in pages all over the world. In Spanishs newspapers too. The change to colour didn’t take place in a short time. Since the end of the XVIIIth century many publications have been trying to come up with solutions to represent full colour images. A different red ink in the early gazettes was not enough. Engraving experiments and new press techniques will open the way to the XIXth century. Daily papers were the last ones to incorporate colour, although prior to this there were other publications that had used it. This research is mainly based on the issues kept in the National Library in Madrid and on the knowledge of Art and Journalism investigators.
