This article contains methodological proposals for a comparative analysis in the history of ¡ournalism, sti/1 fettered by an over reliance on a chronological breakdown more in keeping with political and social history and a lack of tried and tested elements of overa// interpretation. lt poses a general interpretative scheme for the various national chronologies, based on a comparison between the mainstream traditions of Great Britain, France, Germany, Ita/y, the United States and Spain, lt a/so identifies a series of factors determining progress and backwardness
in the general history of ·ournalism; these factors favour a general interpretative analysis and a better understanding o ¡the different rafes of development in each national context, while also facilitating a comparison of the various traditions,
