The festive, carnival-like spirit is deeply rooted in Mediterranean culture and arts. Countless festivals of a religious or distinctly pagan nature dot the lands surrounding this sea, which supports and connects them. The fiesta also runs through the entire filmography of the Valencian filmmaker Luis García Berlanga, as it could not be otherwise. It is undoubtedly present, sometimes with great prominence, throughout his film legacy. In his case, the popular fiesta draws directly from his beloved Fallas of Valencia, as an unmistakable sign of the jubilant, anarchic and carnivalesque nature of his films. Beginning with Luis García Berlanga, whose centenary year of his birth was just recently celebrated, three studies on the work of the Valencian director can be found in this monograph entitled, Mediterranean, Fiesta, and Carnival; Cinema and the Arts. The articles are presented in chronological order according to the sequential production of his films. As such, we first find an analysis of ¡Vivan los novios! (Long live the bride and groom) (1970), followed by the Leguineche trilogy: La escopeta nacional (1977), Patrimonio nacional (1980), and Nacional III (1982), and we conclude the volume with La vaquilla (1985).
