Abstract

This study analyzes the media structure in Chile in the context of recent transformations, integrating a media cadastre (2019-2020) with data from the Worlds of Journalism Study (WJS, 2021-2023). The results show a growth in media diversity, driven by regional and digital media expansion. However, significant structural inequalities persist; for example, the Metropolitan Region accounts for 58.4% of employment in the field, reflecting a geographic concentration. Likewise, media conglomerates, representing only 17.5%, concentrate 44.4% of journalistic employment, showing their weight in the sector. The study also highlights changes in the professional profile of journalists. Female representation has decreased from 43.2% to 32.2%. There has been an aging workforce, with an average age that has increased from 33 to 41.1 years. At the same time, there has been an increase in professional specialization, reaching 91.5% of journalists. The analysis concludes that, although historically Chile has been identified as a country with a high media concentration, recent changes show an evolution towards greater diversity in the information ecosystem.
