Abstract

Digital entertainment is a fundamental part of teenagers' lives. The aim of this research is to gather a corpus of streaming television series in which, as part of the plot, a character self-injures; and to analyze narratively the how and why of self-injury, what function it fulfills in the story and whether or not it romanticizes the self-injurious act itself. The methodology of this study is based on filmic analysis together with discourse analysis, which will be applied to the eight series selected after a screening process through both generalist and specialized search engines. The result includes eleven characters and a total of thirteen self-injurious acts on screen, acts that vary in form, place and intention. The analysis has made it possible to distinguish representations of self-injury that focus on sensational aspects from those that opt for a more responsible approach. This study highlights the problems involved in dealing with mental health issues involving teenagers in serialized digital fiction intended to reach a wide audience.
