Gender differences regarding Spanish citizens’ perception of Data Science

Abstract

The aim of this article is to determine whether there are gender differences with regard to the knowledge and attitudes of Spanish citizens toward data science, and whether those perceptions have been altered by the pandemic. For this purpose, an online survey with closed questions was conducted with a representative sample of 1,105 male and female citizens in two phases (January and October of 2020), in order to compare the degree to which the Covid-19 pandemic has influenced such perceptions. The results show that knowledge regarding Big Data and Artificial Intelligence is modest, being higher among men, especially in relation to Big Data. The level of interest decreased in the second pase in both genders, which points to several gender differences with regard to the perception of benefits and risks of their application: men perceived more benefits than women, while women generally perceived more risks with all technological applications in the first phase, yet in the second phase their perception of benefits rose to a level nearly equal to that of men. It has also been observed that in the second phase the perception of risk increased for both genders, and that the differences between the two are not significant

Author Biographies

  • Patricia Sánchez-Holgado, University of Salamanca, Spain

    She holds a degree in Advertising and Public Relations from Complutense University of Madrid, and also works as a researcher at the University of Salamanca, in addition to being a member of the Audiovisual Content Observatory (OCA). Moreover, Professor Sánchez-Holgado is currently the Director of Communication and Innovation at the advertising agency tthegap, and head of the Research Laboratory as well. She is also an associate professor of the Faculty of Languages and Education at Nebrija University in Madrid, and in the Faculty of Communication at the Pontifical University of Salamanca as well. Furthermore, she is an expert in Big Data and Data Science at the Pontifical University of Salamanca with a master’s degree in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies, specialising in Scientific Culture

  • María Marcos-Ramos, University of Salamanca, Spain

    She has a degree in Audio-visual Communication from the University of the Basque Country and a PhD in Audio-visual Communication from the University of Salamanca as well (Extraordinary Award). Professor Marcos-Ramos is an assistant lecturer in Audio-visual Communication at the University of Salamanca and a collaborating member of the Audio-visual Content Observatory at the same institution. Her lines of research deal with the portrayal of immigration and gender in audio-visual fiction, the cinematic depiction of society in films, analysis of audio-visual fiction, etc. She has published articles on these subjects in scientific journals and monographs and is the editor of the
    two following books: Cine desde las dos orillas: directores españoles y brasileños (Cinema from Both Shores) (Andavira, 2018), and A ambos lados del Atlántico: películas españolas y brasileñas premiadas (On Both Sides of the Atlantic: awardwinning Spanish and Brazilian films) (Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca, 2020).

  • Beatriz González-de-Garay-Domínguez, University of Salamanca, Spain

    Associate Professor in Audio-visual Communication at the University of Salamanca (Spain), coordinator of the Affective-sexual Diversity and Gender Identity Unit at the same University, and a member of the Audio-visual Content Observatory, a consolidated research unit of Castilla y León. She is also a graduate and recipient of the Extraordinary End-of- Degree Award in Audio-visual Communication from Carlos III University of Madrid, and has a European Doctorate from Complutense University as well. Her main areas of research are gender studies and sexogenic diversity in television fiction, for which she has published numerous academic articles and conducted numerous research projects.
