Abstract

The aim of this article is to review the thinking and the course of the English literary review The Criterion, based on the commentaries written by its own editor, T. S. Eliot. The review saw the light for the first time in 1922 and closed down in 1939, having been through four different successive phases. The initial principles that originated the review suffered some changes throughout the years and phases it went through. The decline of the publication is considered to have started by the end of the twenties and the beginning of its fourth phase, when the editorial line shifted gradually from the purely cultural to other more ideological issues. Up until then the review had supported a European (i.e. universal) conception of culture, which meant the regular contribution of the best available literary pieces of work from English and non-English authors. This shift in tendency in The Criterion can be appreciated by carefully analysing the articles by Eliot.
