Abstract

Since 2016, the analysis of disinformation and fake news has become one of the main trends in scientific research fields. In order to discover what are the topics, areas of knowledge, countries of origin and methodologies of these studies, as well as to analyze their impact, a systematic literature review in the Web of Science database was conducted. A total of 605 articles published between 2016 and 2020 were analyzed. Nonparametric descriptive and inferential statistical methods (Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests) were applied with the aim of discovering significant differences in the number of citations received in each of the aforementioned variables. The possible solutions to tackle disinformation are the most frequent topics, but papers on the propagation patterns of false content receive more citations. There is a high presence of quantitative studies, mainly from the Anglo-Saxon context. The topic is the only variable that can be considered relevant in the impact of this research.
