Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore the artist profiling by Argentine author Leila Guerriero, an outstanding member of the Latin American movement that calls itself the New Chroniclers of the Indies. In these texts, Guerriero captures these Hispanic American creators’ voice, contradictions, and obsessions through her personal gaze, in which the author’s subjectivity emerges. Perspective is a key piece in Guerriero’s narrative dexterity, one that allows her to produce these biographical discourses. Using a hermeneutical approach, in her interaction with her interviewees, as well as in her interpretation of their accounts and actions, the chronicler seeks –and finds– “plots,” in Paul Ricoeur’s terms. With them, and resorting to tools from a wide array of genres, she designs these profiles, or possible versions of a life, that often challenge the official ones.

Author Biography

Laura Ventura, Carlos III University of Madrid, Spain

She holds a Ph.D in Hispanic Literature (Outstanding Cum Laude) from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. She holds a degree in Literature (Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires), and in Social Communication (Universidad Austral, Buenos Aires), a MA in Journalism (Universidad Di Tella, Buenos Aires) and a MA in Spanish Lexicography (Real Academia Española de Letras, through a Carolina Scolarship). She is an assistant professor at Universidad Carlos III, Madrid (Humanities Department), where she teaches, among other subjects, Comparative Literature and Hispanic Literature. She also teaches Images and Representation: Representing the Body at the Master in Contemporary Spanish Language and Literature. She also taught History of Journalism at this university. From 2010 to 2014 she was a member of the Contemporary Cultural Content at the Austral University, a chair led by Pedro Luis Barcia. She co-authored with Barcia: The path en literature. Journey through languages and cultures (2013), and The tunnel, the underground roads of culture (2020). She has written for more than a decade in various sections of the Argentine newspaper La Nación (Culture, Entertainment, La Nación Magazine, Ideas, International, etc.) and she writes theatre reviews.
