The Audiovisual as a Tool for Social Change in Human Rights Violations

Abstract

This doctoral research examines the relationship between video activism and social change. What role does audiovisual media play in social mobilization? To address this and other questions, the dissertation integrates a literature review, case studies, qualitative interviews, and the rarely employed experimental design, a methodology that is seldom used in Spanish research. The study finds that video is an essential tool in activism, both for its value as documentary evidence and for its ability to transform attitudes and beliefs through various types of audiovisual productions. Findings indicate that disinformation significantly undermines the credibility of activism despite the use of audiovisual media and that video may produce unintended effects on social mobilization indicators.
